Theo các kết quả nghiên cứu, nước ép mãng cầu xiêm có thể tầm soát và tiêu diệt có chọn lọc các tế bào ác tính. Graviola là sản phẩm tự nhiên nên theo luật liên bang Mỹ không cần có bằng sáng chế. Như thế, làm sao nó có thể mang lại lợi nhuận nếu các con cá mập dược phẩm công bố khả năng trị liệu “phép lạ” của mãng cầu xiêm ra thị trường? Họ chờ cho đến khi chiết xuất được dưỡng chất chống ung thư của Graviola và bào chế được loại thuốc chống ung thư bằng thành phần nhân tạo từ chất này, xin bằng sáng chế và thu lợi.

Khi viện Khoa học Y tế Mỹ nghe tin này, nó bắt đầu truy tìm những công trình nghiên cứu chống ung thư liên quan đến cây Graviola lấy từ khu rùng mưa Amazon của Brazil.
Nước ép này có thể giúp làm chậm sự phát triển của các tế bào ung thư so với Adriamycin mà không hề làm hại gì đến các tế bào khỏe mạnh cả!
Năm 1976, Viện Ung thư Quốc gia Mỹ tiến hành cuộc nghiên cứu đầu tiên về loại cây này và kết quả cho thấy, lá và thân của Graviola tiêu diệt hữu hiệu các tế bào ác tính.
Nhưng nghiên cứu vẫn chỉ được lưu hành nội bộ chứ không công bố ra ngoài. Sau đó 20 nghiên cứu độc lập khác của các công ty dược hay viện nghiên cứu ung thư do chính quyền tài trợ đều cho thấy khả năng trị ung thư của Graviola.
Tuy nhiên, vẫn không có ca thử nghiệm nào được tiến hành chính thức tại các bệnh viện. Chỉ đến khi nghiên cứu của Đại học Cơ đốc giáo Hàn Quốc đăng trên tạp san Journal of Natural Products khẳng định một hoá chất trong Graviola đã tiêu diệt các tế nào ung thư ruột nhanh gấp 10.000 lần hoá chất Adriamycin thường dùng trong hoá trị ung thư người ta mới vỡ lẽ. không gây nôn ói, sụt cân và rụng tóc.
Điều quan trọng là không như các hoá chất điều trị ung thư khác, Graviola và nước ép mãng cầu xiêm không hề làm hại gì cho các tế bào khỏe mạnh và không có tác dụng phụ. Người bệnh thấy mạnh khỏe hơn trong quá trình chữa ung thư và các bệnh khác; năng lượng được tăng cường và sống lạc quan hơn.
